From Horror to Hallmark: How I Conquered Fear and Embraced Faith

I used to love horror movies. My dad and I would watch horror movie marathons together back in the day, curling up on the sofa with popcorn, eagerly anticipating the adrenaline rush brought on by suspense. The thrill of wondering if someone or something was going to pop out from a door, from under a bed, or from out of a picture was exhilarating. I loved being scared.

However, as I’ve gotten older, I've come to realize how much fear can take away from you. The enemy loves to use fear to keep you from moving forward, and I've grown to dislike horror movies. I now hate the feeling of anxiety they bring, the heart-pounding tension, and the uncertainty of what’s going to happen next.

These days, one of my guilty pleasures is watching Hallmark movies. What appeals to me most is their predictability, though in no way do I think that they are superior in production or acting. Despite the minor complications, misunderstandings, or obstacles, I always know everything will work out in the end. What was once wrong will be made right. Regardless of the sappiness, horrible acting, or naivety of the characters’ reactions, I still tune in to watch them. I love knowing that even when characters make assumptions or draw wrong conclusions because of fear, they will eventually figure out their mistakes.

Watching one of those movies, I realized that, as a Christian, I should live my life that way. If I truly believe that God will take care of me and make everything alright, if I believe what God’s word says—that He will never leave me without help (Let your character [your moral essence, your inner nature] be free from the love of money [shun greed—be financially ethical], being content with what you have; for He has said, “I will never [under any circumstances] desert you [nor give you up nor leave you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you helpless], nor will I forsake or let you down or relax My hold on you [assuredly not]!” Hebrews 13:5)—and if I trust that all things will ultimately work out for me (And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose, Romans 8:28), then I should have the same pleasure in living my day-to-day life as I do in watching those sappy Hallmark movies.

No matter how mundane day-to-day life can seem, no matter how many complications arise, and no matter how many diverse hardships happen, I should live without fear, anger, and anxiety, knowing that all will work out in the end. God’s word is true, and I need to act like I believe it!  Let’s keep it moving!
